Essen 2019 haul 29 October 2019

This post is about what I brought back from Essen – as well as some things I'd been thinking about but ended up not buying.

Auction winnings and games for other people:

A Railroad Ink. promo board; Between Two Cities; Tobago; and Automobiles: Racing Season. Shake Up and its promo pack, Possession and its expansion, and lots of Flash Point.

The main haul: Odyseja, Magic Maze Hidden Roles (not sure how much sense this makes, since I only know one other person who likes Magic Maze and he's several hundred miles away), Lux Aeterna, Lovelace & Babbage; then demonstrator freebies Conflicting Legends, Doctor! Doctor!, Among Thieves and Finger Guns at High Noon. (I'll probably keep Among Thieves, but the others may go into a maths trade still in shrink.) Also Mental Blocks (but not Tuki which I couldn't find at a decent price), Bloom Town, and an ex-demo copy of Aftershock.

Just visible on the left: the Aeon's End: The New Age mat.

Finally a bunch of promos from The Dice Tower, which will be going into their respective games.

Considered but not bought:

Reset '86: not yet available, and looks mechanically uninteresting.

Trial of the Temples; Jiguan: The Eastern Mechanist; Jixia Academy: all more expensive than UK retail.

Coloma: heavyish euro with a Western theme, which ticks none of my boxes.

Throne of Allegoria: seems oddly lacking in anything fun.

Trismegistus: interesting ideas but a famously bad rulebook and I didn't see anything to outweigh that.

Not Alone: Exploration: not available.

Project L: would have been a Kickstarter pickup, but they had last-minute problems with the prototype batch.

Sarah's Vision: oddly over-abstracted for me.

So, You've Been Eaten: not available.

Obscurio: turns out to be an Asmodée company, and while I'm not boycotting them I'm trying to put my game-buying money towards the smaller companies that actually need it.

Just One; The Quacks of Quedlinburg: neither available in English.

Tuki: couldn't find it below UK mail-order.

Arcana Magica: weirdly unappealing when I saw it in person.
