Where on the road am I five minutes from home?
I have data. I can check this. (Images follow.)
Algorithmically, I look for the first data point that's within a
suitably small distance from home; then I track back five minutes and
plot where I was at that moment. Simple!
Obviously the motorway will be faster than the other roads, but it's
surprising to me just how inconsistent it is, given that one can
usually travel at the maximum legal speed. It may well be that
variations in the last mile or so (off the motorway) are making the
difference.
It's not as inconsistent as the other, more urban routes, though.
This actually has some use to me. I tend to listen to audiobooks while
en route, and I recode them into five-minute chunks since I use
various different devices and I don't have an automated way of
transferring my progress between them. So when I'm less than five
minutes from home, I shouldn't start another chunk.
