Space Dandy 21 September 2014

2014, 13 episodes: AniDB

A nostalgically strange series about the dandiest man in space.

Best appreciated if you know classic space anime of the 1970s and 1980s, which I mostly don't; a lot of effort has gone into making it look like those shows. Unfortunately that didn't really leave much room for coming up with anything terribly new and interesting. This is the sort of show that relies on the viewer saying "hey, this is a lift from that series", and reckons that (plus the protagonist being lazy and lecherous) is enough to get by on.

There's no continuity; each episode is basically its own story, often including Dandy's death, and sometimes the destruction of the universe. (Episode 4, the zombie one, is probably the best of them.) This is the type of humour that has characters only because someone needs to walk into the jokes, as distinct from a series like Space Brothers or Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou which develops characters and does funny things with them.

I can't really recommend this. Maybe if you enjoyed The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, since much of the humour is in the same style; maybe if you know your old space anime inside-out and want to play "spot the references", which is where I got my enjoyment from even though I'm not spotting most of them. Second series started in the 2014 summer season.
