2015 modern fantasy, 12 episodes:
AniDB.
Sequel to 2012's Kamisama Hajimemashita; vt "Kamisama Kiss" or
"Beginning of Life as a God". Ordinary schoolgirl Nanami has become a
shrine deity, and is still trying to learn how to do her job.
The original series was 13 episodes, but because it was
establishing the ground rules of the world felt as if it had more to
it than this. This is a manga adaptation, and the manga is still
running; what we have here is largely set-up for some of the big
plotlines later on; nothing gets resolved. (Though there's no
confirmation of another series yet.)
As before, there are lots of references to various bits of Japanese
mythology, most obviously Shinto, and I'm sure there are still lots of
things I don't understand. The romantic comedy of Nanami and her
familiar Tomoe is trying to turn into Big Drama, but there's so much
other stuff happening that it barely gets a look in. Like most
long-running series it's accumulated a large cast, most of whom get
forgotten about for most of the time.
The art is lovely and distinctive, a pleasing blend of traditional
Japanese illustration styles with a more modern approach; the
character design for non-humans is pleasingly inventive.
This isn't the star for me that the original was, but it may well end
up being a worthwhile bridge to a third season.
