Parody of contemporary slice-of-life and romance. Aki Tomoya tries to
create a computer game (in one of the standard Japanese models, with
good art and multiple-choice gameplay) with the assistance of various
schoolmates.
The setup seems like a generic harem, but this is a surprisingly
self-aware show. Yes, there's still lots of fan-service, but there's
also plenty of self-referential commentary about it, and about the
clichés of plot that are going into the game even as they're playing
out in the primary narrative.
The parody is fairly lazy, though, and that does mean that the
characters readily fall into stereotypes. That's all right up to a
point, but the real problem here is that I'm effectively trying to
write a review of the first half of a book. This definitely isn't the
end of the story (it cuts off pretty much in mid-narrative) but even
though the broadcast episodes only cover the first half of the novel a
second season has not yet been scheduled at the time of writing. In
fact I can't recommend watching this unless or until there's some form
of conclusion.
