Sore ga Seiyuu 04 May 2016

2015 slice of life, 4-koma manga adaptation in 13 episodes: AniDB, vt "Seiyuu's Life". Ichinose Futaba is a novice voice actress; along with her friends, she goes to auditions, gets together in a singing group, and generally tries to advance her career.

It's an intriguing combination of cuteness and bowel-loosening terror as any failure might be The Big One; unfortunately the audience is rather removed from direct involvement. Futaba is such a lightly-sketched character (she admits herself that she doesn't really know what she wants out of her life other than being a seiyuu) that she never particularly engaged my sympathies.

One of the three principals is supposed to be a high schooler, with the other two having part-time jobs outside the industry, but you wouldn't know it from the character designs. Minor characters are more of a mix of styles, with some caricature, some in the usual current anime mode, and some realistic (mostly the several famous seiyuu who appear as themselves, and are of course all nice people who go out of their way to be helpful to a newcomer). Voice acting, as one might hope, is very good throughout.

I suppose that if I were a young fan with dreams of working in the anime / manga / idol industry one day this might be a useful splash of cold water, but it relies on the viewer's fascination with the subject matter and doesn't get round to providing much by way of character or plot.
