The Grand Tour: 2017-2018, 11 episodes. Clarkson, May and Hammond
continue to pretend to make a motoring programme.
It really has nothing to do with practical motoring, just as Top
Gear mostly didn't: it's sports cars and impractical challenges, alas
with the return of the celebrity interview segment (not made more
interesting by taking them two at a time).
It's the challenges that I find most enjoyable: taking old Jaguars
round Colorado to "prove they're reliable", refuelling on the move, or
trying to break the British amphibious-vehicle water speed record. I
think the first season must have been regarded as too subtle: this is
blatant parody, with replacement vehicles of different colours never
mind models, obviously fatal crashes, and occasional explosions.
Anyone who still thinks this is a serious motoring show is really
not paying attention.
I don't watch much comedy, so for all I know this may be done better
elsewhere; but the team has settled into the new-ish format, and apart
from the tedious celebrities it works quite well.
