2020 SF novella in the Innkeeper series. During Treaty Stay, an annual
holiday, Dina has to cope with yet more potentially-lethal alien
guests.
This is quite slight, and basically follows the same pattern as
Sweep of the Blade: a problem is presented, protagonist solves it.
Some of the problems are not solved immediately, which makes for a
little variety, but from the comic-relief avian philosophers (main
problem: stop them killing each other as part of their debates) to the
hugely powerful and mysterious warrior-mage who is apparently here to
meet… some human?, everything here is basically in the book to allow
Dina to look good.
"It was a meatgrinder. The street quite literally ran red with blood.”
She said it with relish, the way most women who looked her age would
say, “My husband took me on a cruise and there was free wine.”
Which is what one sometimes wants. I like reading about competent
people doing things well; I like reading about people in relationships
who share things with each other rather than letting them build up
into huge problems. There's no major trauma here, no enemies that
can't be dealt with with a bit of effort, and lots of feel-good.
But, you know, don't start here. Start with the first book. Why
wouldn't you?
