2019 romance novella in the Reluctant Royals series. Likotse,
assistant to Prince Thabiso, met someone amazing while she was briefly
in New York last year - but then Fabiola cut things off without
explanation, and Likotse's been trying to forget her ever since. Now,
by chance, they meet again…
It's pleasant and sweet and all, but it feels just a bit too
forced. Yeah, something came up in Fabiola's life such that she had to
change all her plans and dump all the fun stuff… but the way she's
then so casual at the second meeting doesn't quite hold together
with the personality that we learn about. It doesn't help that it's
one of those plots that could have been resolved with a quick
conversation either at the time it happened or now, but Fabiola won't
do it.
But on the other hand I like the people. And I like the fact that
having someone who's lived in the country for twenty years picked up
by Immigration, locked up without trial and threatened with
deportation is represented as simply a thing that happens now, not the
result of something exceptional like a Bad Nasty Bureaucrat or some
other procedural villain.
Not great, but better than A Duke By Default.
