This Meetup-based
boardgames group remains on-line for the moment; as usual we got
together on Jitsi and then played some games on BoardGameArena.
First was
Twin Tin Bots
at which I seem to be fairly terrible, though I do enjoy it. (In
particular I like the way there are never timing questions, because
you move immediately on your turn.)

Then on to Eminent
Domain; the
influence from Race for the Galaxy is obvious, particularly the
leader-follower turn dynamic, the progression from exploring to
settling planets, having a choice between economic hegemony and
conquest, and the complete lack of ability to take other players'
planets. At the same time, this is a more straightforward game (no
keywords, and your military is just as ephemeral as economics) and the
deck-building aspect is enjoyable. Still not one I plan to buy, and
I'll probably never play it enough to get competent, but a good game
nonetheless.
