This Meetup-based
boardgames group remains on-line for the moment; as usual we got
together on Jitsi and then played some games on BoardGameArena. (I
missed the mid-month meeting, but we had an intercalary one on the
fifth Monday.)
Several of us know and enjoy (Rise of) Augustus, so we thought
we'd try the reimplementation,
Via Magica.
And… it's OK, I guess. The original game isn't particularly thrilling,
though it can be good fun; this one's been simplified (several of the
card powers now let you use a specific token as a wild card; the cards
that let you interact with other players are gone; the "resource"
rewards, for most gold and most corn, are also gone), but keeps much
of the enjoyment.
I mean, I didn't buy Augustus and I'm not going to buy this. The
Roman theme is of neutral interest; the "cartoonish magic students"
one puts me off. But now I know that if I see this being played I can
have similar fun to what I'd have playing that other game.
Kingdomino,
which just doesn't fit together in my head; so I rely on luck, and
luck doesn't provide.
And finally, new to me Letter
Tycoon… at
which I turned out to have a knack for finding words. Haven't got the
hang of the purchasable special powers yet, but I'll get there…
(Won this game; played with some strangers and promptly lost
thoroughly.)
