1999 police procedural audio, four short stories, by Nick Fisher. DSI
Julie Enfield (played, as usual, by Imelda Staunton) investigates.
A Cure for Death
A murderous doctor? The plot progression is unusually obvious but it
generally holds together. I'm not convinced that being trapped while
the villain rants is particularly impressive as far as demonstrating
one's mastery of police work is concerned…
The Art of the Matter
Art theft and an old school Essex gangster (Sean Barrett) who
effortlessly steals the show. At least a bit of inventiveness this
time, and it manages to break away a bit from the standard template.
Five Star Killing
Ah, those innocent days when Rohypnol had to be explained to the
audience. Dead floozy behind a fancy hotel, lots of obstructionism,
and a bit of gratuitous and largely out of character police brutality
that's apparently supposed to make us feel better.
Soho Espresso
Harmless old shopkeeper in Soho gets murdered, and turns out to have
been involved in lots of dodgy goings-on. (Back when there were dodgy
goings-on in Soho.) Of course it's not that simple, even if the
resolution (like most of them) won't be any surprise. The best of the
batch.
