2021 science fiction comedy, 10 episodes. The Cerritos continues to
do all of Starfleet's trivial and boring jobs (and they continue to be
surprisingly dangerous).
Again, this works better watched as a batch than one week at a
time; the right state of mind for enjoying it isn't quite one that I
normally occupy, and it takes a few minutes each session to get into
it.
Things are slightly better than in season 1; in particular there's
less punching down, and more comedy of misunderstanding. The
characters mostly stay true to themselves rather than doing what the
comedy needs them to do. It's still nothing revolutionary, but it
holds together; and the writers and continuity consultant are clearly
having fun. On the one hand, naturally with the entire Star Trek
toybox to play with there must be a temptation to re-use stuff that's
already been in the series; on the other, they are at least still
trying to be inventive, building new "Trek-style" incidents rather
than just rerunning standard plots.
There's even something of an ongoing plot thread this time, though
quite a minor one; and rather than being resolved in the final
episode, it's used to construct a season-ending cliffhanger. There's
also plenty of other setup for season 3.
It's definitely junk-food, but television is a good format for
junk-food and it works pretty well.
