2022 in boardgames 03 January 2023

In 2022 I managed to play significant numbers of games across an actual table again.

I got back to Essen! Also several other conventions.

And I ran a small convention, Tekelilicon, mostly for the benefit of the discussion.tekeli.li forum which I continue to run, and which continues to be a civilised place. It was a lovely small two-day event and I'll be holding another one later this January.

I played only 45 new games, but many of them were in person, which is always better. Overall, I had 381 plays of 326 distinct games, down from last year. I managed to sell a few, and buy fewer. My collection stands at 163.

My Eddington number for games in 2022 (the largest number E such that I have played E different games at least E times each, also known as an "H factor") was back down to 9, with Rallyman GT and new arrival Sentinels of the Multiverse: Definitive Edition making up the bulk of that – and 26 plays of Terraforming Mars: The Dice Game at Essen. My overall Eddington number has risen from 20 to 21, and 23 is in sight.

The Marlow group continues to meet in a pub, though it's still small for now. I've been going to occasional sessions in Maidenhead and some others further afield.

I did the 52 game challenge again and ended at 44. Too many "your favourite prompt from an earlier challenge" for my taste but I'm back for another year.

I'm still doing a boardgaming podcast with Lee Broderick, though we took several months off as he had to sort out a sudden and involved house move.

I went to Airecon. I got COVID. (Though none of the people I was playing with did, so I think this may actually have been from a post office run the day after I got back.)

I went to Essen. I did not get COVID. And it was bloody marvellous, as Essen is.

In between those two I went to Summer Stabcon (in a new venue), and Tabletop Scotland, in a huge soulless sports hall but still great fun.

The big new game for me this year was Sentinels of the Multiverse: Definitive Edition, played even more than was needed for the solo challenges I was running.

My List of Opportunity (games that I own, that aren't up for trade, but that I have not yet played) at the end of the year:

  • Assembly

Though while I don't usually count expansions for this purpose, I have the Dominion and Breen expansions for Star Trek: Ascendancy which I'd like to get to the table.

Kickstarters that arrived:

  • Sentinels of the Multiverse Definitive Edition (2 months late)
  • Aeon's End: Legacy of Gravehold (2 months late)
  • Sakura Arms (6 months late)
  • Hidden Leaders (3 months late)
  • V-Commandos (V-Sabotage) Ghost (5 months late)

Kickstarters still pending from 2021 or earlier:

  • Ell Deck of course (2020) just give up Bez it's not going to happen
  • Rallyman Dirt (2020)

Kickstarters newly backed and not yet arrived:

  • Damask (expected in January)
  • Aeon's End Past & Future (expected in February)
  • Sentinels of the Multiverse: Rook City Renegades (expected in March)
