2012 mystery-adjacent short story. With a young daughter, Ruth
Galloway feels she ought to get a Christmas tree and otherwise have a
"proper" Christmas.
Well, I admire Ruth most when she's forging her own way rather
than conforming to other people's ideas of what she ought to do. Also
there's barely any mystery here. But this piece, which I believe was
written to promote the next book in the series, does a good job of
observing the regular cast and showing their reactions to unexpected
situations.
It's fine as far as it goes, but it doesn't go very far (there isn't
room for that), and the ending is quite abrupt. Not, therefore, a good
way to get a new reader into the series, but a pleasant bonus if
you're already interested in these people.
