2023 audio drama, adapted in ten parts by Julian Simpson from the
story by H. P. Lovecraft.
No spoilers, but I felt a loss of direction here. There are many
references to the three earlier series (and a re-listen beforehand is
recommended), and a dose of conspiracy in high places which makes some
effort to tie things together, but I never felt fully engaged with the
primary investigation: so what if this guy is at the middle of it all?
He didn't make it up all by himself, he's the head of a conspiracy of
people whose approach is basically the same as his, and if you murder
or expose him then the shadowy forces will just find someone else to
put in his place.
The small-scale stuff is good; the cast is still great; it's just that
it doesn't quite cohere beyond the course of an individual episode.
Still great fun, but it feels less a progression of the story than an
episode in it.
The Haunter of the Dark is available via the
BBC, as
are the earlier series. (If you don't have get_iplayer, you can
apparently download it via the BBC Sounds app.)
