Letters to a Soldier, Julia Spencer-Fleming 16 January 2024

2011 interstitial collection of letters, in the Fergusson-Van Alstyne series. Various people write to friends and family on deployment.

This is a very short promotional piece, which exists mostly as a vehicle for a preview of book 7: after keeping up a book a year for the first five, then skipping a year before 6, Spencer-Fleming took a long break for various life crises, and this was released a month before the next novel to remind readers and bookshop purchasers that the series still existed.

And it's very slight: just five short letters, which will mean nothing if you don't already know who these people are. If you do, though, they're an interesting new view on people with whom you've grown familiar. Spencer-Fleming writes in an introduction that she thinks of herself as a character-first writer, which accords well with my preferences.

Probably not worth seeking out unless you're a completist (and in the USA, which is the only place you'll legally find the ebook - I don't know about hardcopies). But pleasant if you are.
