Eighth 1 Player Guild UK Meet 20 February 2024

The 1 Player Guild is a group of solo game players, communicating through BoardGameGeek. This was the eighth get-together for the UK contingent.

I am still extremely bad at PitchCar, it seems. I'm sure I used not to be.

Tavarua next: you're trying to be the most impressive surfer on both long and short board. Hand management, a bit of luck pushing, and a little competition as you try not to end up competing for space on the same wave.

Lunch! (Yes, that's pulled pork at the top of that burger, just above the stilton.)

We broke into smaller groups after lunch and some of us played Rallyman: DIRT (including one player I've been trying to get into the same place as this game since it arrived about a year ago).

The other players went for Expeditions, set loosely in the world of Scythe.

While they carried on with that, we played Lemminge

and Tinderblox.

We got back together for Just One, which took us on to a slightly early supper (before things got too busy in the pub downstairs).

Then Sentinels of the Multiverse: Definitive Edition, two games, because the first one came up very short: Fanatic, Setback and Wraith versus the "La Gloire" event (a modified Ambuscade) in Megapolis. About turn 3, Fanatic used a Wrathful Retribution, followed by a card power to bring her down to 10 HP, followed by an Absolution to do 3-2-2, with each instance of damage getting a +1 nemesis bonus. Ambuscade went from reasonably confident to defeated in one turn.

So we set up again with the same heroes, versus the Fey Court on Wagner Mars Base. That was a bit more of a meaty fight, finally ended by Fanatic's End of Days—destroying a whole bunch of enemy Courtiers and Advisors, each of which triggered Champion Lugh to add a token to Dagda (before Lugh was destroyed himself).

I'm significantly more impressed with Fanatic now.

Meanwhile the other group was playing Chocolate Factory.

After another reshuffle of players, I played Project L with the Finesse tiles (which didn't make a huge difference, but helped a bit). I still don't find the iconography terribly helpful.

And the others played The Shipwreck Arcana, heavy deduction.

A fine day with excellent people.

"PitchCar" used to be called something else because we played it at Stabcon years ago (back at Woolton Hall). Hammy got a couple of sets and an expansion with things like a jump in it. It was setup on a pool table and to keep play order we all formed a queue that circled round the table until each person got to where they could take their shot. The barriers were yellow back then.

Fanatics' "End Of Days" is good for clearing a big bunch of opposition when it gets overwhelming.

I recently played the Steam version of Sentinels. Warlord Voss played "Forced Deployment" and recovered 7 minions from the trash, supported by some infantry in the environment (forgotten the name, it was Voss's homeworld I think). Then Expatriette lets loose with an SMG loaded with Shokk Rounds (and some buffs from Legacy) and wipes out everything. Very impressive.

Carabande is the French version of PitchCar; I think they're published in different sets but it's the same game.

"End of Days" is a mixed bag a lot of the time, taking out all the useful hero cards too—but in this case, since we got to choose the order of destruction, it loaded up Dagda with an unreasonable number of tokens for an instant win.

Even in the latest version Legacy can be a bit dull to play: you need a really good reason not to spam the damage reduction power on his card. Ah well, maybe a new variant will help.
