2017 SF/romance novella, first of a trilogy. Two space empires are at
war: the Rogue Coalition is caught in the middle.
But more importantly, the emperor of one side has been kidnapped,
and the Rogue Queen (who apparently has time away from ruling her
starving kingdom to go off bounty hunting, which is enough to pay for
food imports) is going to get the reward for recovering him.
But more importantly, he's really hawt.
This was posted as a weekly serial, and has been revised for
publication; it seems that it's now a lot heavier on the romance (in
this phase mostly loving descriptions of the hero's body), and
certainly the SF element seemed nearly pasted on. Random bounty hunter
got chosen as the queen of the people who just wanted to be left out
of the war? And they all love her? Eh, why not?
It's all right, I suppose, and I may well finish the series, but for
my taste Mihalik is much stronger when she lets herself get into the
SF worldbuilding at novel length rather than going all-out for the
romance.
