2021 SF, last of its trilogy that's also a sequel to the Indranan
War series. Empress Hailimi prepares for the big fight against the
godlike aliens.
This one fet like very slow going to me, and I'm normally a fan
of slow books; but for chapters at a time, there's a lot of talk, but
nothing of significance happens. When we to get a space battle or a
critical revelation, it feels dry, and some of the revelations in
particular are so spread out and foreshadowed that they lose a great
deal of their impact. Oh, that faction is the real bad guys? Yeah,
that was obvious two chapters ago.
After the emotional force of the second book, I wonder whether Wagers
had simply lost enthusiasm for the characters and setting, but felt
she had to get this one out to complete a contract, or something of
that sort. It's not terrible, and I like Wagers' writing, but it feels
too slack to be really enjoyable. On balance, I'd say, stop reading at
the end of the first trilogy.
