More gaming with some nearby friends.
Several older and quite lightweight games tonight, starting with
Rummikub, a sort
of gin rummy in which you can not only extend but also modify other
people's melds. I found this suffered from a high threshold to start
the game (if you haven't played 30 points from your own hand, you
can't then get into the interesting bit of modifying other melds), and
of course a lot of chance, but various tactics became apparent during
the game.
Then on to
Qwirkle, which
I've seen but never played. Once we'd worked out what was going on (my
goodness the rules quality is not what it might be, particularly for a
family game), this went very well indeed, though we found ourselves
holding back to avoid building near-sets that other players could
complete.
Since one has to score as one goes along, I can trace our scores
through the game:
Finally SET, which
reminded me quite a bit of
Iota: one similarly
has to make sets of cards that either all differ or all match in each
characteristic. But there's no positional element, which make the game
less of a chore than Iota can sometimes be.
