Assistant to the Villain, Hannah Nicole Maehrer 15 November 2024

2023 fantasy romance, first of a series. Evie is wondering how to cope without a job when she runs into a wounded man in the woods. She helps him, only to discover that he is the Villain who's terrorising the kingdom. But it turns out that he needs a PA…

Utmost fluff. Of course they fall in love with each other; of course they deny it to themselves as well as to each other; of course their own deep personal traumas will be brought to the fore and resolved. (Well, some of them; this is only book one of a planned trilogy.)

It's not a serious attempt at fantasy world-building either: everyone here is basically a modern person in sensibility, and magic arbitrarily fills the place of the bits of technology the author wants while still allowing for kings and castles and monsters.

But if one can ignore all that, it's fun, very much in the anime parody romance style with plenty of sudden events to bring out people's true characters. Oh no, there's a traitor in the Villain's castle! Oh no, the Beast Tamer he hired turns out to be incompetent! Oh no, Evie's father has a magical degenerative disease! But they're sooooo sweet together…

Know what you're getting into. This is not meant to provide you with deep characters or subtle developments; it's meant to hit you in the feels and then scrape you up afterwards. And it does; I'll be back for book 2.
