Three Tales of Gabe and Rathna, Celia Lake 11 July 2025

2021 romantic fantasy, side stories surrounding The Fossil Door.

This is bonus material that will make very little sense if you haven't already read The Fossil Door. A Gentle Touch shows us Rathna being interviewed by Avigail and selected for training as a portal mage (and gives is a glimpse of the future). The Light of Knowledge is from the viewpoint of Gabe's uncle Gil, who understands him perhaps a bit better than his father does, from his injury onwards. Finally, Three Times Told is set after the novel, with discussions of Gabe's injury and the magical events that surrounded it.

It's been a while since I read one of Lake's books, and I was glad to revisit the world. There's even less peril than usual: not only do we know from the novel (as well as the genre, to be fair) that things will come out more or less all right, most of what happens here is explanation and discussion rather than action, and any challenges are purely internal.
