1991 action comedy, dir. Jim Abrahams, Charlie Sheen, Cary Elwes;
IMDb /
allmovie. "Do
good men like Dead Meat Thompson just blink out one day like a bad
bulb? I mean, one minute you're in bed with a knockout gal… or guy,
and the next, you're a compost heap. Doesn't that bother any of you?
Because it scares the living piss outta me!"
I rewatched this to get myself back into a normal frame of mind
after Top Gun. It's not a great comedy, but it has its moments, and
I do find it most refreshing to see that someone else watched that
film and thought "I can't even pretend to take this seriously".
Also, you don't often see Folland Gnats on film. (The enemy aircraft
are F5s and T-38s.)
Basically this is Abrahams trying to repeat the Airplane! magic; but
his source story isn't as compelling, so it feels more like just a
constant parade of jokes, and one never gets close to sympathising
with the characters.
I talk about this film further on Ribbon of
Memes.
