2022 fantasy anthology. What happens to the other girl whom the
glass slipper fits? How do you cope when your baby manifests his
dreams?
The only one of these works I've read before is the original
"Good Neighbors", later published with its sequels as the first thing
I read by Burgis. Other material is set in a fantasyland like that
story, in fairy tales (there are two separate revisions of Cinderella
here), or in a magically-tinged real world somewhen in the nineteenth
century or even the modern day.
What they have in common though is a fine economy of material: these
are short stories, not novels manqué, and nothing is introduced that
won't be used. Some of them are enjoyably fluffy, some are dark and
emotionally solid, many are romantic, but they all have genuinely
interesting characters (many of whom are female), and satisfying
resolutions.
I'd recommend this as an introduction to Burgis's range, as well as a
set of excellent stories in their own right.
