I am starting an APA (Amateur Press Assocation). Like contributing to
one, this is not a thing I expected to do at my time of life…
I've been contributing to Ever and Anon,
the online successor to the hardcopy Alarums and Excursions, since
September last year. I've also written some
software to make it easy
to assemble a single PDF issue from disparate contributions. And what
better way to test it than to run my own?
Also, I don't want to push E&A towards boardgaming when to many
people (sometimes including me) these are quite separate hobbies. So
Of Dice and Meeples is to be
an APA about hobby boardgames, broadly defined (cards, dice,
whatever, not so much mainstream games like chess or poker).
This is a call for contributions: if you think you have something
interesting to say about boardgames, please jump in! The deadline for
the first issue is 5 May 2026. There's also a section of my gaming
forum for talking about it.
(Meanwhile, if you fancy writing about RPGs, E&A is open for
submissions; I don't mean to compete with that.) In either case all
you need is write something vaguely interesting and generate a PDF,
and if you have basically any word processor you can already do the
latter, perhaps with the help of pandoc (there's even a WASM
version that can run entirely inside a browser with no installation
needed).
Of course I'm using Typst for the actual PDF
production part of the pipeline. (But Typst can't include other PDFs
and anchor links into them.)
