I was not at this year's EMFCamp. But I'd
like to have been.
I thought of it as an radio, electronics, small computering sort
of thing, based on the people I know who go, while I tend to use a
full-sized computer to do a small computer's job and I haven't
soldered for literal decades. But this year, while it still was that,
the people I heard from were talking more about the handcrafting side.
And the idea of trying new skills on the basis of "a little bit of
experience in this can be useful, here are some traps to avoid, and
here's how to get started with basic tools" is much more interesting
to me these days than "do a weekend course, then buy expensive
equipment and set up your home workshop", which tends to be more of
what I see offered. (I mean, I don't have room for a home workshop.)
Also I have now camped as my current creaky self rather than as a
young man, and while Shrewkfest last year was definitely easy mode
(tent right next to the parking spot, warm and dry weather but not
over-hot), at least I now have some practical idea of the sort of
thing I have to be able to do in this situation. (And I'll be off
there again soon.)
