2023 romance/SF/mystery; 57th novel of J. D. Robb's In Death series
(SF police procedurals). A retired Internal Affairs officer is found
shot in his home, but Dallas sees right through the apparent suicideā¦
The emphasis of this book is in the actual police procedure. A
friend of the victim, also a serving police officer, calls in Dallas, but
reluctantly agrees that he can't be directly involved in the
investigation. There's a whole series of dirty cops, some of whom have
got their lives in order, some of whom have died, and their relatives
who might want revenge.
Some of these books want to show off a particular sort of crime or
part of society, or to name-check series regulars, but the primary
focus of this one is as a detective novel, and it gives us several
good looks at what happens when this world's police go wrong.
