Total Solar Eclipse, August 2026 13 August 2026

Just before sunset? How could I not, really?

With phone camera this time, because I was wrangling the pinholes and, until the sun sank too low, the projection screen (two bits of card out of the recycling bin) so I wanted a camera I could use one-handed.

But here it is a few seconds after maximum extent:

One day we shall eat the sun.

Apep will eat the sun on 2 August 2027 with 6.5 minutes of totality through Luxor.

I saw and photographed totality on cruise ship Azamara Journey off the coast of Iceland. There was thin and varying cloud cover all the time until about 10 minutes after totality at which point we lost the sun completely behind clouds. Before totality the clouds were thick enough I couldn't see anything through proper eclipse glasses so had to resort to glances at the sun with my polarising sunglasses, the glasses seemed more effective than you would expect. I had made an eclipse filter using drainpipe to slip over my mirrorless camera lens, but again it was virtually unusable. At least photographing the eclipse progress without a filter I was only risking the camera's sensor since the viewfinder is digital. All my pre planned exposure settings and low ISO etc to see the colours of the corona were unusable due to the constantly varying cloud cover. I had to leave the camera in full auto and just vary the exposure compensation to avoid over exposure. I do have a corona photograph and there is a visible prominence in red. The slightly pitching ship deck and 25mph winds matters a bit harder, no long exposures possible.
